My Time In Patagonia

Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the major natural sights that awaits you in Patagonia

Helene Cooper works for Imaginative Traveller, who run tours all over South America. Here she tells us about her recent trip to South America’s Patagonia, arguably the world’s best snow-capped wilderness, as part of their 23 day tour of Argentina and Chile.

Having been blown away by the frenetic pace of Buenos Aires, I wanted to explore the region’s natural beauty, venturing into Patagonia, the pristine South American wilderness, where sweeping mountain valleys and deep blue lakes would make me lose all sense of time.

For me Patagonia begins in the Magellan Straits, named after the Portuguese adventurer Ferdinand Magellan, the very first explorer to circumnavigate the entire globe. These waters are much calmer than the Drake Passage, a more violent stretch of water between Antarctica and South America.

On arrival the weather was cloudy, with a thin mist covering the mountains, dampening the idea of beautiful clear skies and shimmering lakes, but I was sure things would improve.

We made our way across a large gorge, and into an area of open sea, where we spotted a huge shipwreck, which was thick with rust, having clearly collided with a nearby rock many years ago. A casualty of this ‘safer’ route, the ship made me wonder about the perils of Drake Passage, and adventurers who had tried and failed to conquer its fierce resistance.

After spending the day hiking across wet terrain, we made our way to a local guesthouse for a well-deserved cup of tea and rest, before we continued north by vehicle on a long journey up into Chile and on to Torres Del Paine National Park, which I was sure would be one of the highlights of the entire trip.

The first actual morning in the park when I woke, the sun glistened through my window and the air outside was bright and crisp, with dew covering the grass – it was a perfect day to see Torres Del Paine in all its splendour.

Some of the views were absolutely incredible: gigantic, booming mountains capped with the most pure-white snow, with crystal-like lakes mirroring the view from above; view upon view of deep blues and pearl-whites – it was like gazing into an ice-age paradise.

Our hikes extended through thick, green, mossy hillsides, past tumbling glaciers and along rocky scree slopes, walking round the edges of amazing crisp glistening lakes, interspersed with periods of driving, where we could relax while marvelling at the beautiful views (Torres Del Paine National Park is home to 97km of roads that wind through the area’s landscapes, allowing you to explore its more unchartered areas).

One of the most beautiful sites of Torres Del Paine National Park was undoubtedly the wildlife: watching birds of prey in the distance climb the mountain tops, arching their wings towards the clouds, before swooping towards the ground, was incredible. We were also lucky enough to see guanacos, ñandúes, foxes and huemuls.

Our trip also took us further north and back into Argentina to Los Glaciares National Park and the Perito Moreno Glacier, a huge jagged plane of ice which sits in a deep valley, having frozen above the adjoining Lago Argentino.

The glacier was absolutely huge, 30km in length and 75m high, it was like a giant boulder of leaden ice, with narrow navigable walkways. It’s amazing waiting for an iceberg to ‘calve’ – the ice turns a different hue as the sun rises and falls, creating a beautiful collage of colours – before you suddenly hear a loud crack, with a block dropping vertically into the lake below, breaking the silence and stillness of the mountains.

I could go on forever about this trip, which extended further into Chile and the Chilean Lake Distrct and Santiago, but unfortunately I’m out of time and space – fortunately in Patagonia, space is something that’s not short in supply.

Top Tourist Attractions In Tunisia

The picturesque whitewashed village of Sidi Bou Said, one of the top tourist attractions in Tunisia...!

Historic sites and natural landscapes make up the top tourist attractions in Tunisia. Tunisia is a country in North Africa with a Mediterranean coastline.

Situated south of Malta and Italy, two of the most popular European destinations, it has an identity of its own as a tourist hub. If you’re planning a trip to Tunisia, check out the following list for a preview of its best attractions.

1) Bardo Museum

It has a fine collection of Roman mosaics collected throughout the country. Bronze and marble sculptures from the 2nd and 3rd century are also on display. The museum has Islamic and paleo-Christian sections for their respective artifacts.

2) Mediterranean Beaches

Tunisia offers a choice location on the southern portion of the Mediterranean and offers beautiful white sand beaches with crystalline waters. Tunisia has a lot of nice coastline with plenty of great beach towns.

A good option is to find cheap flights to Enfidha and then either take the train or rent a car and explore the area. Enfidha is only 100 km from Tunis and 45 km from Sousse.

3) Sidi Bou Said

It is a picturesque village with whitewashed structures and a variety of intricate architecture. Writers and artists will be easily drawn to its charm.

There are plenty of artsy souvenir shops in Sidi Bou Said. It’s a wonderful place to get lost in for a few hours.

4) Dougga

The extensive Roman site is one of the top tourist attractions in Tunisia. It is a fine example of ancient Roman architecture in North Africa, and as such, is not to be missed!

There are several ancient Roman buildings in the area including a theatre built in 168 AD. Other notable attractions in the area include Capitoline Temple and the Mausoleum of Ateban.

5) Tunis Medina

The old Arab walled town of Tunis is a melting pot of history and culture. Fine Arab-style buildings can be seen throughout the medina but there’s nothing quite like Zitouna Mosque with its square minaret and byzantine columns.

The Dar Hussein Museum of Islamic Art and the 18th century Torbet el Bey are two more interesting places in Tunis Medina. The souqs provide a taste of the Arab culture as they sell locally made goods such as gold, carpets, leather, perfumes, and household materials.

6) El Djem

It is an ancient Roman amphitheater that is surprisingly in better shape than the more popular Coliseum of Rome. El Djem is three stories high and could accommodate up to 30,000 viewers. Underneath the site are some tunnels and dungeons where gladiators, criminals, and wild animals were placed before being sent out to the arena.

Within the area is a museum with a collection of Roman mosaics that comes second to the Bardo Museum. Surely, El Djem is one of the top tourist attractions in Tunisia.

Just What Does New Zealand Have To Offer Tourists This Year?

View of Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand is one of the world’s most spectacular destinations, and there’s no doubt it remains top of vacation bucket lists for millions of people. With its gorgeous scenery, wonderful wildlife, wealth of parks and nature reserves, and the amazing coastline that stretches around both islands, you really won’t know where to start.

Furthermore, you’ve also got the welcoming and hospitable personalities of the Kiwis to experience too, and that alone will make your trip unforgettable! If you’re thinking about taking a trip to New Zealand this year, here are some of the top attractions that await families, friends and couples.

Auckland – North Island

This is the city for lovers in New Zealand, and although Paris might be the city of love, it’s got nothing on the romantic landscapes that stretch into the Kiwi countryside. The Maori call Auckland Tamaki Makaurau, after an ancient goddess who was fought over for centuries by crusaders, so the city really does have romantic roots!

Blessed by some of the most fertile farmland in all of New Zealand, the Auckland region is where most of the agricultural employment is in the country, so there’s plenty of opportunity to meet other tourists on working visas, or you could even spend a day farming yourself!

Whether it’s the Pacific Ocean or the Tasman Sea, the glorious sands of New Zealand have been touched by some of the world’s most diverse (and warm!) waters on the planet, so getting your feet wet is a must. The Auckland coast also experiences some of the best weather in the country, so if you’re looking to top up your tan, this is the place to be.

Although most parts of the city dominate the skyline with high rise offices and buildings, there’s a completely different side to Auckland only an hour or two outside the centre. Thermal springs, rain forest and deserted beaches surrounded wildlife reserves and wineries, and this is where you’ll find the real New Zealand culture you’ve heard so much about.

Christchurch & Canterbury – South Island

If there’s one place to immigrate to in New Zealand, look no further than Christchurch Canterbury. Continuously voted as one of the most livable cities in the country, this region combines modern and vibrant culture with history, tradition and easy going provincial charm, something rare in today’s world.

From amazing restaurants to beach BBQ’s, grand designs to Gothic architecture, Christchurch Canterbury is still an emerging tourist destination, and a particular highlight of the South Island.

Offering a wealth of hidden bays and glorious peninsulas, this region is isolated yet in many ways more accessible than other popular parts of New Zealand. Although New Zealand is warm enough, it’s during the summertime when the top attractions really begin to stand out, including mountain biking through Mackenzie Country and trekking around the glorious natural landscapes of Arthur’s Pass.

There’s even skiing in the winter for those adrenaline junkies!

There are many New Zealand attractions worth exploring and experiencing, so make 2014 the year that you discover of the world’s most deeply beautiful destinations!

Seven Reasons to Visit Ottawa This Winter

Skating along the Rideau Canal is one of the things you can do when you visit Ottawa this winter!

With its beautiful architecture, world class museums, cosmopolitan feel and gorgeous hotels, Ottawa is always a great city to visit. Personally however, I believe that it’s the Winter months when Canada’s capital really shines.

It might be cold, perhaps even freezing, but when the temperature drops, so does the snow. And there’s just something magical about Ottawa when it’s blanketed in snow and ice.

From the world’s largest ice rink to the magic of Winterlude, here are seven reasons why I believe Ottawa is the perfect Canadian city for a short break this Winter.

The Worlds Largest Outdoor Ice Rink

Most people are surprised to learn that Ottawa is home to the world’s largest outdoor skating rink. The Rideau Canal Skateway is 7.8 kilometres long and has officially been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s located in downtown Ottawa and is open from January until February. Skate rental is both affordable and available on site.

Downtown Skiing

If skates aren’t your thing, how about a bit of cross country skiing? Gatineau Park is located just across the river and has over 200 kilometres of well groomed trails. Downhill skiers are also well catered for in Ottawa with both Camp Fortune and Mount Pekenham situated less than an hours drive away.

Fine Dining

With no less than 2000 restaurants to choose from, it should come as no surprise that Ottawa is a foodies delight. Highlights include crepes at Baker Street Cafe, fine dining at Beckta and spectacular sea food at the Pelican Grill. Meanwhile, international cuisine can be sampled in the cities beautiful foreign districts such as Chinatown and Little Italy.

Winterlude

Each February, Ottawa comes alive with the annual Winter festival, Winterlude. This year it takes place from January 31st until February 17th and if you’re in town, it’s not to be missed. Highlights include the ice slides of SnowFlake Kingdom and the international ice carving competition held at Confederation Park.

Byward Market

The Byward Market is one of Canada’s biggest and oldest markets. Home to a wide range of stalls, restaurants and cafes, it’s the perfect venue for a family day out. Christmas trees, carollers and the smell of maple syrup combine to produce a welcoming and enchanting environment each and every Winter.

The Country’s Best Museums

Being the capital city of Canada means that Ottawa gets the lion’s share of the country’s best museums. Highlights include both the National Gallery and the WarMuseum. My personal favourite however would have to be the Canadian Civilisation Museum. If you want to learn more about Canada’s history, I couldn’t recommend a better place.

Great New Years Entertainment

Finally, we have New Year’s Eve, this year, visitors will have a choice of not one, but two outdoor events. The first can be found at Sparks Street Mall which promises hot food, cold drinks, live music and a fireworks show.

The second event will take place at City Hall and is being hosted by the Scottish Society. This means kilts, bagpipes and an atmosphere that’s expected to rival Edinburgh’s annual Hogmanay party.

Needless to say, hotels book out fast at this time of year, and advanced bookings are therefore very much recommended. The Minto Suite Hotel in Ottawa is a great place to start. Enjoy your trip!

Top Reasons To Visit Israel

The Skyline of Jerusalem, Israel

The top reasons to visit Israel is often steeped in historical and religious undertones. For better or worse, one can define the country of Israel as a land that has its own positive and negative when it comes to the topics of religion and politics.

As far as politics is concerned Israel was a result of United States’ interference in the regional conflict between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. This part of modern history has become a very unpleasant topic in general media that often put Israel and even the religion of Judaism in a very negative light.

However, when one can find negativity in politics one can also find positivity in tourism. Visiting Israel may not be a bad idea, especially as far as religion and history is concerned.

1. Tell my babe I’m going to Tel Aviv!

If partying and a wonderful nightlife are your top reasons to visit Israel, then you better head straight away to Tel Aviv as soon as your airplane arrives at the airport. Tel Aviv is all about beaches, night clubs and bars. In fact, you may even feel like it’s always summer season in Tel Aviv due to its sunny atmosphere around the coastal resorts. There’s no other city in Middle East that takes getting stuffed, getting drunk and even getting high than in Tel Aviv.

2. Visiting the Holy Land of Abrahamic Faiths

If you despise hedonism and follow a life of deep spirituality, then certainly you can find the best of the top reasons to visit Israel. The Holy City of Jerusalem is not only sacred to the Hebrew people but also to the followers of the succeeding faiths of Christianity and Islam. The Wailing Wall of the Ruined Temple of Solomon is a very sacred landmark for Jews. However, not far from the Jewish holy place lies the Christian Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Islamic al-Aqsa Mosque in the Dome of Rock. Israel also has famous Christian landmarks outside of Jerusalem, such as Nazareth where Christ used to work as a craftsman and in Galilee where he performed most of his ministry works.

3. Rugged adventure in rugged Negev Desert

Aside from wild parties and a serious spirituality quest, there is also one part of Israel that captures the essence of wholesome adventure that does not require very serious philosophical undertones. People tour the Negev Desert simply because it is a fun experience. Some people’s idea of fun may involve a wild spin with one’s rented four-wheel drive. You can also try riding camels if you want it done in ancient hardcore way. Not a bad idea to pick up some cheap travel insurance as well if you plan to hit the dunes.

4. The Land of Milk and Honey – literally!

When God revealed to the prophets about the land flowing of milk and honey, maybe that revelation extends to the culinary prosperity that people enjoy in modern Israel. The Mediterranean climate makes this land abundant, where diversity of food can give a nice feast. Arab dishes are also very popular.
