Why the hell would you go to Kansas City?

Yes my friends, a very valid question. Kansas City is in fact one of the most random US cities you could possibly conjure up, hell, it’s not even in Kansas! But, when my job with Jeep required my presence in middle America, I heeded the call. There are cheap flights to Kansas City from almost all parts of the country as it’s pretty much at the epicenter of our great nation, so it ain’t so hard to get to believe it or not.

I spent 5 full days in Kansas City, Missouri for the auto show, probably longer than anyone who’s not from there would plan to spend in such a place, but to tell you the truth, it’s actually a cool city, and has a way more sizable, clean, fun and interesting city center than other bumblefuck metropolises – I refer to Saint Louis, Louisville and Greenville, South Carolina.

My Motorcycle Obsession Travels Stateside

If you’ve been reading this site for the past few months, you’ve seen I was just in Asia and doing a lot of exploring on tiny motorcycles. It was the cheapest, most liberating way to get around, and I had a blast doing it – until I shit the bed and crashed in Pai, Thailand. It didn’t deter me too much, and after about a week healing up, I was back riding under-powered, two wheeled vehicles screaming around the countryside with not  a care in the world.

After my fateful return to the stars and stripes, I just couldn’t shake the idea of how cool it would be to ride a REAL motorcycle here in Miami with the almost ever-present sunshine, flat roads, and beautiful coastal views. So to really solidify my quarter-life crisis (got two tattoos on my arms last month as well), I signed up for the motorcycle endorsement class (required by Florida) and was sitting in a dingy-ass class room in the hood of Miami Gardens at 8 am that same Saturday. My class was full of rag tag miscreants like myself, you know real scum of the earth, a young Jewish lawyer, Brazilian kid who owns multiple gas stations and a professional Serbian basketball player. The Best Beaches in Miami!

Miami Beach

Looking for a budget-priced Miami hostel that’s close to the beaches but far away from the crowds of loud tourists? Then set your sights on accommodations near these off-the-beaten-path beaches that have peaceful enclaves where you can unwind and relax however you like best — fishing in breezy atolls, exploring shoreline ecosystems or mastering water sports like kite boarding. While South Beach might be the place to see and be seen, Miami offers a wealth of alluring beaches that will make you melt into the sand and never want to go home.

North Shore Park Beach

During the day, this beach attracts families who enjoy the comforts of the surrounding picturesque park dotted with big shady trees, barbeque pits and picnic tables. Kids can enter programs offered by the North Shore Recreational Center at 501 72nd Street that uses the surrounding natural habitat as a schoolroom. After sunset, the beach gets empties out, but on full moon evenings, spontaneous drum circles form in the soft sand that’s perfect for unabashed dancing.

Sunny Isles/Golden Beach

This section of Miami-Dade County is known as The Venice of America because of the interconnecting bridges, canals and intercoastal waterway, but there’s a noticeable culture gap between the multi-racial diversity of Sunny Isles and the upscale tone of Golden Beach. As it turns out, you can set out walking south along the Sunny Isles beach and stroll along until you find yourself on the exclusive private beaches that flank the mansions of Golden Beach. Celebrities like Eric Clapton and Bill Gates own these homes so don’t be surprised if you’re asked to leave.

Matheson Hammock Park Beach

View of Downtown Miami

Though not actually on the ocean, this 630-acre natural park contains a man-made atoll pool in Coral Gables that boasts excellent fishing and a refreshing sea breeze that makes the shoreline a superb location for picnics and barbeques. Coral stone buildings house a snack bar and restaurant while the on-site marina has a fishing tackle shop, fueling station and boat launch ramps. Right next door is the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and a short hike across the R. Hardy Matheson County Preserve brings you to the Montgomery Botanical Center that conserves rare species of palms and cycads.

Crandon Park Beach

Crandon Park

If your ideal day at the beach involves getting back to nature, you’ll be delighted with this eco-adventure park on Key Biscayne that encourages visitors to connect with the great outdoors. Boardwalks from the Nature Center at 66747 Crandon Boulevard lead to fossilized reefs, butterfly colonies and twisted mangrove forests. The 2-mile beach fronts a calm lagoon with low surf impact, making it appealing to kite surfers and kayakers who take advantage of the gentle winds and sedate waves to sharpen their skills. Equipment rentals and guided tram tours of Bear Cut Preserve are available from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week.

Hollywood North Beach

Further north from the glitzy Hollywood Beach and just south of Dania Beach at 4800 North Ocean Drive is a rather forgotten little stretch of beach that has no shops, restaurants or rental kiosks – it’s just sand and surf and sunshine. Usually deserted on the weekdays, this quiet stretch of coastline ironically nicknamed Dog Beach of Hollywood is also home to a successful feral cat colony, so you might encounter some curious stares from the feline residents. A sweet little bike trail runs alongside the sandy beach and there’s plenty of parking with easy access to the shoreline and bus stops on both sides of Ocean Avenue. Pack your own picnic and after lunch stretch your legs on an invigorating walk to the wharf at the end of North Beach Road.

Great Family Holiday Getaway Destinations!

If you want to get away this holiday season, you may want to try a place that will help you to get into the holiday spirit. A place with snow and Santa is ideal. Consider these popular locations for your next family holiday getaway!

Rothenberg, Germany’s Winter Wonderland

Rothenberg Christmas Market

The city of Rothenberg, Germany is transformed into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. The Rothenberg Christmas Market attracts visitors from all over the world and is the key contributor to the city being the most visited Christmas Destination in Germany. This walled city offers a beautiful ambiance for visitors and a number of elegant German Hostels for an affordable place to stay with the kiddos in tow. The 20 foot tall rotating Christmas tree decorated with shiny bright lights leaves all in astonishment. The comforting feel of the city is only enhanced with the enticing smells of Lebkuchen and other sweets. Rothenberg is without a doubt a memorable Christmas destination for all.

Walt Disney World in Florida

Mickey Mouse

Disney World is a magical place to go during the holiday season, and while they’re might not be any natural snow, there will be plenty of other holiday spirit to make up for it! Epcot Center’s Holidays Around the World is one spectacular performance. You’ll get to see how Christmas is celebrated in other countries, and if you venture over to Disney, you will get to engage in holiday festivities with Mickey and the gang.

While you are watching Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Cinderella dance around festively, you can eagerly wait for the incredible fireworks show. The resorts near the Disney properties are great, but renting villas near the property is better for families. Disney is pleasant holiday for the whole family.

Magical Santa’s Lapland in Finland

Reindeer in Finland

Santa is often spotted in this cold northern location where the reindeer roam free with the hare and the Artic fox. People can engage in snowmobiling and toboggan-racing near Lapland, Finland. Reindeer lassoing and snow hockey are also common outdoor activities in Finland. The Elf School and Santa’s Control Center are coveted by the children that visit. An Ice Gallery and snowball range are also a lot of fun as well.  The cabins and villas in Finland are not as luxurious as some places, but the outdoor activities may be worth roughing it with modern amenities for a couple of days.

The above was a guest post from Ken Torrino who is a frequent traveler and works doing web relations for Elliman, brokers for NYC, Long Island and Hamptons Real Estate.

Why are Americans so Fat?

Obesity in America

Yes, I’m American, and my country is full of fat people. It’s the truth. With the average adult weight in the USA coming in at over 180 lbs, and the third highest in the world, you better bet there are some pudgers NOT walking the streets (they wouldn’t be fat if they did). Armed with a degree in exercise physiology, a personal training certification and years of traveling abroad under my belt, I’ve always wondered why are we Americans heftier than the rest? Here are a few personal theories. Read More »
