Alicante’s Top Summer Festivals!

Alicante, Spain is a brilliant holiday destination to visit at any time of year, though I think it really comes alive in the summer. While it has fantastic weather in the spring, autumn and winter, come here between June and August and you’ll discover the conditions to be even better. Add to that the great variety of festivals that are happening over this period, and I’m certain that you’ll have a memorable getaway.

View of Alicante, Spain

Indeed, with a spectacular range of events set to take place in the coming months you can be sure of coming across something truly spectacular, no matter what your interests are. To give you a helping hand deciding which to attend, I’ve put together a bit of information about a few of the city’s top summer festivals.

Jazz Festival

I’m a huge music fan and, upon taking a Monarch flight to Alicante last summer, I headed to the local Jazz Festival. If you’re planning on visiting the city this year, it is certainly a spectacle that I recommend you check out.

Commonly referred to as Fijazz, this fantastic festival sees some of the leading names in world jazz converge on Alicante each July to perform in venues across the city.

Although the line-up for the 2013 event is yet to be announced, Grammy-winning singer Concha Buika, Spyro Gyra and the Roy Haynes Trio are among the acts to have performed in previous years so I’m more than confident that this year’s line-up will prove to be top-notch.

Bonfires of San Juan

To get a true taste of local life, I recommend you attend the Bonfires of San Juan festival (one of the best festivals in Alicante!). This traditional extravaganza marks the beginning of summer and, although it has been an official public event since 1928, the tradition of lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks goes back much further than this.

While much of the fun is traditionally centred around June 23rd, the Bonfires of San Juan has been extended to a fortnight of celebrations, featuring firework displays at the Plaza de los Luceros and a medieval market in Alicante’s historic centre. You’ll also get to see dance troupes from across the world perform, as well as observe floral tributes being offered to the Virgin of El Remedio, the city’s patron saint.

This year’s festivities last from June 14th to June 29th, so there should be plenty of opportunity for you to be part of the action, especially if you plan to go on a break before the start of the school summer holidays.

Feast of the Assumption

Lastly, I’m going to look at the Feast of the Assumption (or Virgin de la Paloma, as it is known in Spanish) which takes place every year on August 15th. Sadly, I didn’t get the chance to attend this event when I visited Alicante last year, but I really wish that I did!

This national holiday celebrates the life of the Virgin Mary and is marked by locals tucking into a delicious feast to mark both her passing and the assumption of her body up to heaven. Make sure that you’re in Alicante when the festival is on and you can expect to have the chance to enjoy some traditional Spanish fare.

If you’re thinking of visiting Alicante this summer, let us know by leaving a comment below. We’d love to hear from you!

Ibiza Getaways!

photo of people on the beach in Ibiza, Spain.

Once upon a time, holidays in Ibiza were all about big nights out and long lazy days sleeping it off on the beach. It was all about which club nights are on where, who’s spinning the decks and what tunes they’re lining up. Then it was a case of partying ’til dawn, grabbing a few hours’ sleep and hitting the beach to snooze for the rest of the day, before getting ready to do it all again that night…

Head to Ibiza today and it’s a very different story. San Antonio and Ibiza Town are still packed to the rafters with bars, pubs and superclubs, and they rock with the latest tunes every summer – after all, Ibiza has a legendary nightlife and is still the godfather of clubbing holidays. But there is plenty more to see and do on the White Isle than the inside of a nightclub.

what is San Antonio, Ibiza like?

From lavish five-star escapes to cheap Ibiza holidays, there’s plenty of choice to suit all tastes and budgets. If you’ve got the kids in tow, the pretty resort of Santa Eulalia has plenty going on, and is well equipped to keep all ages entertained. There’s lovely Portinatx on the north coast, a small resort with a glorious sheltered bay that’s ideal for little paddling feet. And if you’re after a real beach holiday, Playa d’en Bossa is hard to beat. Home to the longest beach in Ibiza, this fabulous resort is ideal for sun-worshippers and sandcastle enthusiasts. There’s also a water park nearby to keep the kids entertained.

One of the easiest ways to get to Ibiza is with a package holiday, for instance by searching for package holidays by Thomas Cook, one such company that sells deals to Ibiza. This is particularly beneficial if you’ve got the kiddos, as it takes the hassle out of going away. And that means you can start your holiday from the moment you step off the plane…

How Traveling has Changed in The Past 10 Years

Travel Agency

When I used to travel with my parents back in the day (hell only in the early 2000’s), things were much different than they are today. The internet was definitely gaining a lot of momentum, but people were still very wary of paying for things online, and especially booking their hard earned vacations. I even remember my dad refusing to let me have his credit card to order a CD on the web because he thought everyone was going to steal his identity (fart noise).

This was the golden era of the travel agent. One who utilized the web to make their bookings and do a little research, but still had the masses at their mercy who knew no other way of planning a vacation. I remember my parents, who were definitely pretty savvy travelers, still going to the travel agent to book our trips not so long ago. Read More »

My First Urban Love Affair

Architecture in Barcelona

Architecture in Barcelona

When I studied abroad in Barcelona back in 2007, it was my first real experience living on my own (lets be real, sharing a dorm room  on campus with another awkward freshman goon doesn’t count). I had decided to study abroad earlier than most kids (sophomore year) along with one of my friends, Pranay.

We thought it would be cool to venture to the same destination to study, so after a little back and forth, we both agreed that Spain and Barcelona in particular would be an amazing place to go. Once we handled a  bunch of paperwork, locked down Spanish Student Visas, and got things straight with our home university, we were ready to plan the next part of living abroad, where to live. The Route to My Roots

This is a guest post from one of my favorite people, my Aunt Randy. She not only loves travel, she loves going cool and off-the-beaten places, like this past month when she headed to the town in Spain where we think our family might have come as our last name is the same. Check out her adventure to find the elusive, speck-on-a-map town of Albelda, Spain.

My name is Randy Albelda. Not only am I Jeremy’s aunt, I am also the family historian at this point.  My parents were born in Bulgaria and were Sephardic Jews — meaning that their ancestors came from Spain at around the time of the Spanish Inquisition (the late 1400s/early 1500s).  That was when the Spaniards brutally expelled their Jews and Muslims.  Bulgaria was a likely spot for Sephardic Jews to end up by the mid 1900s since it had once been a part of the Ottoman Empire that welcomed wandering Read More »
