Las Vegas Hangover

When you’re planning a tour of America, a great place to look for inspiration is Hollywood.

For trips to San Francisco watch Anchorman, for jaunts to New York sit down with a box of popcorn in front of The Great Gatsby and for a hair-raising tour around Los Angeles, dig out your Speed VHS.

However, if Las Vegas is your destination there’s really only one series of films that you need to revisit: The Hangover.

The stag party-themed trilogy features many scenes in Sin City, where the ‘Wolfpack’ of four friends – Stu Price, Phil Wenneck, Alan Garner and Doug Billings – engage in a farcical series of debauched and wild events involving exotic animals, Mike Tyson and plenty of booze.

While it’s perhaps not advisable to do exactly as the Wolfpack does during your time in Las Vegas, you can certainly use the films as inspiration for some wild nights of your own.

Caesars Palace

This legendary hotel on the strip, a mammoth construction consisting of nearly 4,000 rooms, features prominently in the films.

In the first movie it is the location where the foursome stay for Doug’s bachelor party and in the third installment, the characters attempt to rappel down the outside of the hotel using bed sheets.

Although abseiling is out of the question, you can certainly have plenty of fun at Caesars Palace, thanks to its numerous stylish bars and lounges, a range of swanky swimming pools – swim-up blackjack anyone? – and an action-packed casino. It really is an all-day destination and the epitome of all things Vegas.

Bellagio

Another of Sin City’s iconic hotels and casinos, the Bellagio’s enormous dancing fountains are featured in The Hangover’s opening scenes.

It’s a pretty awe-inspiring site to watch the Fountains of Bellagio display, featuring 1,200 nozzles and 4,500 lights all coordinated to classic tunes such as ‘Viva Las Vegas’.

But in true The Hangover style, it would be rude not to step inside and indulge in a bit of gambling. Hopefully, like Doug, you’ll have some chips left in your pocket at the end of the night, but with the Bellagio known as ‘The Office’ to many of the seasoned poker pros who call it home, you could be in for an expensive evening.

Wedding chapel

In the first film, Stu ties the knot with a stripper called Jade at the Best Little Wedding Chapel. While this is a fictional location, there’s plenty of real wedding chapels you can visit in Vegas where hundreds of couples participate in ad-hoc ceremonies each year.

One of the best-known is the Little White Wedding Chapel – featuring a Drive Thru Tunnel of Love – where many celebrities have tied the knot. Follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan, Pamela Anderson and Britney Spears … or maybe not. After all, what would your mum say?

The Hangover

After a day and night spent visiting these film sets, you’ll no doubt have a bit of a hangover yourself. Unsurprisingly, Vegas has made allowances for this, so if you can drag yourself out of bed, you’ll find plenty of places where you can indulge in an all-you-can-eat buffet pick-me-up.

One of the best is found at the Wynn, where breakfast is served from 8am. The Buffet room has 15 live-action cooking stations and food from all over the world.

Caribbean Spotlight: Tobago

Tobago is a southern Caribbean island connected to the island of Trinidad. Tourists from around the world flock to Tobago for fun, culture, and a carefree tropical vacation. The bulk of the nation’s tourist activity happens around the well-manicured southwestern portion of the island where many of the most renowned resorts are located. These popular areas include Crown Point, Store Bay, and Pigeon Point. Then, of course, there are the beaches, of which Castara, Englishman’s Bay and Bloody Bay are among the most notable and pristine.

Thailand’s Best All-Around Beaches: Pattaya

Thailand is known for many things including delectable cuisines, bustling Bangkok, pristine mountains, and of course its countless beaches. Most people who vacation there will mix in a bit of it all, but one thing not to miss is soaking up the sun on one of the myriad islands or famed coastal destinations, including none other than, Pattaya.

Beach in Thailand

Pattaya is one of the biggest beaches close to Bangkok, at just a 2 hour drive south. It is a bit notorious for its large concentration of beer bars and sex tourism, but the city government has been doing a lot to spruce up the beaches and make everything a bit more family friendly. If you want to check out some hotel packages, see Best At Thailand – Pattaya for some pretty good deals.

The beach is a sandy 3-mile stretch, with many quieter parts to do give it your best shot at appeasing the sun gods, but there are also plenty of other activities like Mini Siam, a theme park displaying miniature replicas of sights in Thailand as well as international ones. You can also check out the Pattaya Elephant Village to see shows/go for rides on one.

If adrenaline is more you fix, then sign up for a round of paintball, go for a ride in some high-speed go-karts or go shooting at the 19 lane indoor gun range. Another popular thing that foreigners (referred to as Farangs in Thai) do while in Thailand, and especially by the seaside, is to rent a motorbike or scooter and enjoy the scenic drives. Just make sure you where a helmet and never drink and drive! If you happen to have a bit of rain one night, take in a movie at one of the modern cinemas or even play some bowling at one of the two bowling alleys.

If you are of age, and make it to Pattaya, you must certainly spend at least one night out to experience the wild nightlife which brought this small seaside city to recognition. There are countless bars, dance clubs and go-go bars, and if you just take everything for what it is, you’re sure to have a memorable night out!

Madeira – The Pearl of the Atlantic!

Last month, I flew from Boston to the Azores. Have no idea where that is? I didn’t either until my uncle told me he was actually from there (I thought he was from Brazil). My flight from the good ole’ US of A plopped me in Ponta Delgada, the largest city in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, and a group of islands almost in the middle of the Atlantic. They were stunningly beautiful and are now one of my top travel recommendations. But when I was there, I met some people who said they were from some other autonomous archipelago in the Atlantic that I hadn’t ever heard of either, Madeira.

After doing a bit more research, this other mysterious Atlantic archipelago is now on my travel bucket list. Located a bit closer to Europe than the Azores, Madeira is just 310 miles off the western coast of Africa, and 620 miles south of Europe. It’s only about an hour and a half flight from Portugal and around 3 hours from the rest of western Europe. Read More »
