Cruising for history lovers

History lovers will love the ruins of Olympia ... after arriving there in a cruise ship!

Europe’s got a fantastic history, but it isn’t always easy to get to grips with different elements of its past while you’re on holiday. After all, not everything happened in a single destination! For me, the best kind of break for any history lover is one that takes you to lots of different places – like a cruise.

While you can, of course, head to a number of destinations independently or on an organised tour, a cruise is by far the most relaxing, luxurious option. So, if you want to immerse yourself in the past without losing the relaxing element of your trip by making lots of complicated travel connections, it’s definitely the way to go.

Look on websites like Cruise.co.uk and you should be able to find plenty of itineraries that stop in historical cities such as Rome, Olympia and Athens – and I’ll take a look at their historical highlights below.

What to see in… Rome

Rome is one of Europe’s most exciting historical cities, sprinkled as it is with the vestiges of the Roman Empire. Perhaps the crowning glory of the place is the Colosseum, which was the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire. Dating back around 2,000 years, the Colosseum used to host animal hunts and gladiatorial shows, entertaining audiences of between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.

Another highlight are the Catacombs of St Callixtus, which are one of the city’s most important historical sites. These old burial chambers acted as much more than tombs – and today are filled with fantastic frescoes and sculptures. During their lifetime, the catacombs have been popular pilgrimage destinations, as well as shrines to martyrs.

What to see in… Olympia

If your cruise gives you the chance to visit Olympia, take it, because this place is an absolute must-see. Located in Greece, the village of Olympia is just a stone’s throw from Ancient Olympia – the place where the story of the Olympic Games we all know so well today began.

What’s remarkable about Ancient Olympia is that so many of the historical structures, like the original stadium, are still standing. What’s more, there’s a lot you can see within the stadium itself – for example, if you look carefully you can make out the start and finish lines of the 120 m sprint track, while things like the judges’ seats have also survived.

And don’t worry about not understanding what you’re looking at – the signage here is really good, with helpful drawings to show you how the place would once have looked, as well as plenty of information in English.

What to see in… Athens

Staying in Greece for our next destination, Athens is another unmissable historical city – and, of course, is one of the most famous in the world. The Acropolis, for which the city is best-known, stands on a large rocky area right in the heart of Athens, with the modern city sprawling all around it. What’s nice about this is that it gives you an idea of just how important this heritage is to the city.

The Acropolis is where you’ll find a host of famous ancient buildings, including the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike, both of which date back to the 5th century BC. As well as visiting the buildings themselves, make sure you pop into the Acropolis Museum. This houses the artifacts found at the Acropolis site, and includes spectacular statues.

Five Reasons to Hit the Road in Victoria, Australia

Many travellers arrive in Victoria, Australia with plans to visit cosmopolitan Melbourne, but the surrounding countryside of this vastly diverse Australian state is also well worth visiting. One of the best ways to explore all of Victoria’s heritage, culture, and scenery is on a road trip. Whether you have an afternoon or a month, you won’t run out of sights to see. The following are a few reasons to plan a road trip in Victoria.

Victoria Australia coast

1. The Great Ocean Road

No discussion of road trips in Victoria would be complete without an obligatory mention of the Great Ocean Road, so we’ll get it out of the way first. There’s a reason why this road is famous, with its spectacular scenery and 12 Apostles rock formations. The route hugs the coastline between Torquay and Allansford, taking you past rainforests, rugged cliffs, and peaceful inlets. Along the way you can stop and enjoy the vibe at relaxed seaside villages and gaze at long-lost shipwrecks, for a truly memorable journey.

2. Alpine Adventures

Although Victoria’s best-known for its beaches, it also boasts snow-capped mountains for a change of scene. The Great Alpine Road passes through the high country, travelling from Wangaratta in the northeast to Bairnsdale in the Gipplsand region. In total, it covers 308 kilometres of alpine scenery such as meadows filled with wildflowers, quaint country towns, and snow-covered mountain peaks. Get out of the car and stretch your legs with a little cross-country skiing, snowboarding, fishing, or hiking.   Read More »

Caravanning in the UK!

Caravan holidays have always been popular as a cheaper alternative to holidaying abroad, giving people a chance to explore the natural wonders of the United Kingdom. Perfect for family bonding and meeting other like-minded people, caravan sites are often associated with the older generation and don’t have the most exciting reputation. However in recent years caravanning has been taken to another level, with many different groups deciding to swap their beach break in Spain for a seaside session in England. Activities like glamping and glamavanning are bringing a modern take on camping and caravan holidays; a chance for younger people to inject a bit of glamour and luxury to the traditional British holiday.

caravan in parking lotYou can book a caravan on a traditional site filled with nostalgia, or bring along your home comforts and friends for a UK adventure close to local bars and amenities. Whatever you choose, it’s a great idea to research caravan sites and see which one best fits your purpose. Sites like The Caravan Club, offer great membership opportunities so you can find the best holiday at the cheapest price. From busy family sites to more secluded areas that offer privacy for your group, the club looks to make sure you have all the facilities you need in the right location for you.

With caravan sites located all over the United Kingdom and Ireland, you can go on a journey to a range of different areas, all with their own charm and benefits. Sites in Scotland offer the chance to have a relaxing break amongst the serene lochs of the Lowlands or the towering mountains of the Highlands. Try Wales for sites that can be found within the valleys, offering a chance to really embrace Welsh culture and their love of the land. The rural areas of England are full of caravan sites that are surrounded by enchanting forests and woodlands, streams to splash in and picturesque lakes for picnics. Spend a weekend in Ireland, surrounded by the Celtic countryside and mysterious ancient caverns, to hear tales of the myths and legends that are embedded within Irish culture.

Wherever you decide on for your caravanning in the UK adventure, The Caravan Club can help you plan and book a truly unforgettable holiday. Just remember to pack for sunshine and rain, as the weather is bound to be less predictable than a week in the Mediterranean!

South of France – The Lap of Luxury

Church tower in St. Tropez, located in the south of France

Southern France is one of those travel destinations that has got it all. Excellent weather, stunning coastlines and, of course, it benefits from the French fanaticism over food and drink. It’s no wonder it is a favourite with British tourists, who can be seen boarding Monarch Airlines flights to Nice in their droves every year. Its coastline position, sun-bleached houses and plethora of great bars and restaurants make it a top place to spend a two-week holiday.

But it’s a mistake to think this charming city is all that southern France has to offer, and the resorts of St. Tropez and Cannes are equally as attractive, offering different atmospheres and attractions. For a more in-depth look at our three favourite cities, read on.

Nice

Luxury is not in short supply in Nice. As a top tourist destination, it is home to dozens of top hotels and resorts of the five-star variety. But even if you don’t want to break the bank on holiday, it’s easy to feel special. Enjoy some of that fine French cuisine at a restaurant on the beach, where the fish is dragged up the sand, prepared by a world-class chef and then placed straight onto your plate. Throw in a bottle of good Bordeaux and some decadent desserts, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect evening.

The city’s famous flower market Cours Saleya is also worth a mention. Frequently named one of Nice’s top attractions, its edges are lined with a plethora of cafes and restaurants, while the stalls themselves contain myriad specimens of flowers of all shapes, sizes and colours. Take a bunch back to your accommodation so you can wake up to them every morning.

Cannes

The razzle and dazzle of Hollywood never quite leaves this splendid city, which has played host to all manner of A-listers thanks to its famous film festival. As a result, there is plenty in the way of luxury to be discovered. The glorious five-star hotels on the seafront are where you’ll find the most pampering and attention. Whether you choose the magnificent Majestic or the art deco-styled Hotel Martinez, you’re guaranteed to find a level of service quite unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

If you’re particularly interested in luxurious shopping, wait until April to go, for this is where the city showcases its fabulous fashion as part of the Cannes Shopping Festival. Rest assured, all the big names in the industry will be there, showing off a huge variety of tailored-to-fit and ready-to-wear clothing and jewellery. Fabulous, darling.

Saint Tropez

By far the most naturally beautiful setting of our three southern France beauties, Saint Tropez is a collection of multicoloured ramshackle houses collected together on the rocky and wooded peninsula of the same name. Treating tourists to views across the ocean in one direction, and the supreme Maures mountains in the other, it’s no wonder it is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Europe.

As the resort attracts A-listers every year, you won’t be short of luxurious activities. Take to the streets in search of a trendy bar or top restaurant and you most certainly won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’re likely to spot at least three or four on the same street as your hotel.

So treat yourself to a spot of luxury in the south of France for your next holiday. Go on. You deserve it.

Your Mini Travel Guide to Cuba

Looking to explore all of what sunny and tropical Cuba has to offer? Looking for Cuba resorts and places to stay? Wondering what you should see and do in Cuba? Cuba is one of the most popular vacation spots when it comes to Caribbean travel (minus the Americanos) and thousands of people travel from across the world to this beautiful island every year.

capital building in Havana

Tourists come to learn the rich history and experience the Cuban culture, as well as bask in the sun upon famous beaches like Varadero Beach, Playa Giron and Caya Largo.  Located only 90 miles south of Key West, Cuba has a great history including its independence from the United States in 1902,  Che Guevara’s conquests during the Cuban revolution, the new recent encouragement of entrepreneurial business supported by the government and more.

If you want to see some of Cuba and visit the main attractions that many choose to put on their travel bucket lists when they are there, then you might want to consider the following popular excursions.

Che Guevara Museum and Mausoleum

This is definitely a popular place to visit when you are travelling through Santa Clara, Cuba. When you step inside this museum you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about this important historic individual, known as a hero to many. You are not allowed to take any photos when you are inside, but you will absorb enough in your time there and also see where Che Guevara’s remains are laid in a memorial.

The Cigar Factory Is Always A Hit Among Tourists

This famous factory is a great addition to your ‘must-see in Cuba’ list. You can’t take pictures inside this venue either, but the visit alone will be an unforgettable one. A large team of employees work 8 hours a day rolling tobacco leaves and making authentic Cuban cigars of over 33 brand types.

Bacardi Rum Factory

If you have a great love for rum, then you will want to put this attraction on your to-do travel list. This factory opened in 1868 and was founded by Spanish-born Don Facundo. He actually came up with the Bacardi bat symbol idea because he discovered bats in the rafters at the factory. While you cannot walk through the factory itself while it is in action, there is a little bar area where you can taste samples and buy famous rums like Ron Santiago de Cuba and Havana Club.

When it comes to Cuba resorts, you can choose to live the luxury VIP life at resorts like the new Royalton Cayo Santa Maria in breathtaking Cayo Santa Maria which is adults-only and the perfect place for romantic couples, or take the family to Iberostar Varadero and the Hotel Paradisus Varadero where the whole family can enjoy quality time together. If you are seeking something more affordable, there are cheaper Cuba resorts like Club Amigo Marea del Portillo in Manzanillo or the Sol Cayo Santa Maria in Santa Clara. There are many Cuba all-inclusive resorts that cater to all types of travellers visiting Cuba and doing a basic search on Sunwing.ca will get you what you need for your Cuban adventure.
